Booking your first laser hair removal session is exciting — but it’s completely normal to have questions. What does it feel like? How long does it take? What do you need to do to prepare?

At One Skin Aesthetics, we believe an informed client is a confident client. So here’s your complete, honest guide to your first laser hair removal session.

Before Your Appointment

Preparation makes a real difference in how well your treatment works. Here’s what we recommend in the lead-up to your session:

Shave the area 24–48 hours before your appointment. Unlike waxing, laser hair removal requires the hair to be present beneath the skin — just not above it. Shaving beforehand allows the laser to target the follicle directly without surface hair interfering or causing unwanted heat on the skin.

Avoid sun exposure for at least 2 weeks prior. Tanned skin increases the risk of side effects. If you’ve had significant sun exposure or used fake tan, let us know when you book — we may need to adjust your timing.

Skip waxing, threading, or epilating. These methods remove the hair root, which is exactly what the laser needs to target. Stick to shaving only in the weeks before your session.

Come with clean skin. On the day, avoid applying any moisturiser, deodorant, or perfume to the treatment area. Clean, product-free skin helps the laser work more effectively.

During Your Session

When you arrive at One Skin Aesthetics, your therapist will walk you through the process, answer any final questions, and ensure you’re comfortable before starting.

You’ll be given protective eyewear, and a cooling gel may be applied to the treatment area to help protect the skin’s surface and improve your comfort.

The laser itself delivers quick pulses of light to the skin. Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin — brief and manageable. Modern laser technology also incorporates cooling systems to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Treatment times vary depending on the size of the area. Underarms might take just 10–15 minutes, while a full leg treatment could take closer to an hour.

After Your Session

Once your session is complete, you may notice some mild redness or sensitivity in the treated area — this is completely normal and typically settles within a few hours.

Here’s how to care for your skin post-treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure and always apply SPF 50+ when going outside
  • Skip hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 24–48 hours
  • Moisturize gently — aloe vera gel can be soothing if the skin feels warm
  • Don’t wax or pluck between sessions—shaving is fine

Over the following 1–3 weeks, you’ll notice the treated hairs shedding naturally. This is the process working exactly as it should.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Hair grows in cycles, and laser hair removal is most effective during the active growth phase. Because not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time, multiple sessions are needed to catch each follicle at the right moment.

Most clients require between 6 and 8 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. Your therapist at One Skin Aesthetics will recommend a personalized treatment schedule based on your hair type, skin tone, and the area being treated.
